Mountaintop Domicile

about

“Mountaintop Domicile” was inspired by a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston a while ago. Not in an obvious way. After strolling through the park (and seeing prairie dogs for the first time — they are so rad, like fat meerkats…), we ended up having lunch at the cafeteria.

The cafe had a TV displaying a series of ads on a short loop for various upcoming zoo events. One of them was for a night light show, and it had an intriguing piece of music accompanying it. As I sat chewing on my burger, this song kept playing with this ad in the background, and I thought “that’s a cool little beat”. As it kept looping, I passively started analysing it. It had a straightforward arpeggiated chime melody and a reserved little “hip-hop” beat. After giving it some attention, I was struck by how good it sounded for how simple it was. I made a mental note and carried on with my day, looking at American animals I’ve never seen.

When the time came to write something new, I remembered this little piece of music I heard at the zoo and thought I’d use it as inspiration. That birthed “Mountaintop Domicile”. I started with a simple bell/chime arpeggio and built things up from there. I added some counter bell melodies and a simple lo-fi “trap” beat, some synth flourishes and dusty piano chords. I also chopped up some vocal samples.

The track ended up quite tranquil and kind of quirky. I don’t know if it’s just me, but when things feel overwhelming or chaotic, I often think “I just want to move to a cabin in the woods”. I just don’t want to deal with human drama for a bit. This track kind of made me envision that escape. I guess I could have titled it “Cabin in the Woods” but I settled for “Mountaintop Domicile” which was in my “cool track titles” note on my phone.
