I went through an annoying spell of writer’s block about 2 months ago, and this song was written during and shortly after the worst of it. Because I’ve been releasing so many singles (which is new to me), the endless possibilities and lack of an overall theme kind of got to me I think.

I just didn’t know what I wanted to write, and I didn’t want to repeat myself. I kept feeling disappointed by what I came up with. I also found myself in a strange position of not really feeling inspired by any other music, which hardly ever happens to me — that kind of freaked me out. I think I was just a bit “musiced out”. So, the track title was inspired by this creative block experience.

I probably did about 4 or 5 sketches (some of them fully arranged) before pursuing the completion of this track. I ended up opting for something less layered and more straightforward, compared to my previous singles (especially “Komorebi” which has a ton of texture). This made mixing a lot easier and kind of refreshing. I’m a “less is bore” kind of guy, so keeping things simple is something I still (and probably forever will) struggle with. This was a good exercise in that discipline, in retrospect.

I can’t remember what made me stick with this piece of music exactly, but something clicked. I think it confirmed the best way for me to break creative blocks is to just keep showing up, to keep writing. Sometimes taking a break or walking away for a bit helps, but that more often than not just ends up depressing me.

I’m happy with how this track turned out eventually, and although I’ve definitely written sadder music, I hope you can hear my pain… ;)
